Dinacharya: The Ayurvedic Daily Self-Care Regimen

By Dr. Latha RadhakrishnanPublished on July 18, 2026

Dinacharya is the daily self-care code designed to align our biological clock with the cycles of the sun and moon. Practicing Dinacharya helps clear morning toxins, sharpens sensory perception, and builds robust daily energy.

Morning Cleansing Rituals 1. **Waking Up (Brahma Muhurtha):** Rise before sunrise, between 4:30 AM and 6:00 AM, when Vata energy dominates the atmosphere, bringing freshness and mental clarity. 2. **Tongue Scraping (Jihwa Nirlekhan):** Use a copper scraper to remove the white coating on your tongue. This removes overnight toxins, stimulates internal organs, and improves taste. 3. **Oil Pulling (Gandusha):** Swish warm sesame or coconut oil in your mouth for 5-15 minutes to strengthen teeth, gums, and jaw alignment while pulling out oral toxins.

Grounding and Movement After cleansing, dedicate time to self-massage (Abhyanga) using warm oil. Massage your body in long strokes on limbs and circular strokes on joints. Follow with gentle yoga postures and pranayama (breathwork). These movements keep joints lubricated, improve circulation, stimulate lymphatic flow, and build physical resilience for the day ahead.

Bathe After Massage (Snana) Always bathe after your oil massage using warm water. Bathing washes away excess oil, opens pores to release toxins, and refreshes the mind. Avoid using extremely hot water on your head, as this is said to weaken eye strength and hair roots according to the classical texts.
