Ritucharya: Staying Healthy Across Seasons

By Dr. SreejitPublished on July 15, 2026

Just as we change our clothing, our body requires adjustments in diet and lifestyle to accommodate seasonal transitions. Ritucharya is the branch of Ayurveda dedicated to aligning our habits with the external seasons, keeping our internal climate in harmony with nature.

Adana Kala (The Dehydrating Seasons) During late winter, spring, and summer, the sun draws out energy from the earth and living beings. In summer (Grishma), Pitta rises. Food should be naturally cooling, sweet, light, and hydrating. Avoid intense workouts, heavy spices, and dry, salty foods that deplete body fluids and aggravate heat.

Visarga Kala (The Rejuvenating Seasons) During the monsoon, autumn, and early winter, energy is returned to the earth. Monsoon (Varsha) is a time when Vata accumulates and Agni is weak. Food should be warm, sour, salty, and easily digestible. Regular oil massage and mild exercises are highly beneficial during this period to keep the joints warm and well-lubricated.

Transition Periods (Ritu Sandhi) The 14-day transition period between seasons is called Ritu Sandhi. During this time, the habits of the outgoing season must be gradually phased out, while the practices of the incoming season are introduced step-by-step. This prevents sudden metabolic shock, which is when seasonal colds and digestion issues commonly occur.
