The Healing Art of Abhyanga: Ayurvedic Oil Massage

By Dr. Latha RadhakrishnanPublished on July 03, 2026

Abhyanga is the process of massaging the body with warm, herb-infused oils. This classic therapy is valued not only for skin hydration, but for calming the nervous system, improving muscle tone, and flushing deep-seated cellular wastes.

Benefits of Abhyanga Regular Abhyanga lubricates joints, increases circulation, improves sleep quality, and strengthens the nervous system against chronic stress. It acts as an anti-aging therapy, soothing Vata (the primary driver of cellular degradation). It also stimulates lymph flow, helping the body expel metabolic wastes.

The Correct Technique Always warm the oil before application. Begin at the crown of your head, using circular motions. On the long bones of your arms and legs, use long strokes, and on the joints (shoulders, elbows, knees), use circular motions. Massage the abdomen in a clockwise direction following the path of the colon. Let the oil sit for 15-20 minutes before taking a warm bath.

Choosing the Right Oil - **For Vata:** Use warm, heavy oils like sesame or classical Dhanwantharam oil to ground the nervous system. - **For Pitta:** Use cooling oils like coconut or medicated Ksheerabala oil to soothe heat and irritation. - **For Kapha:** Use light, warming oils like mustard or herbal Eladi oil to stimulate circulation and reduce sluggishness.
